By Way of Correction

Sometime ago, one of my professors found her way to this site, and upon exploration found a factual inaccuracy in my August 30 post about the attrition rate in the Statistics department at Penn State.

I said: “…there are only 5 graduate students who entered in 2001 and only 6 from 2002. There are 17 First Years, so if that’s an average incoming class size, the attrition rate is pretty substantial.”

What I didn’t think about is that not all incoming students are pursuing a PhD degree. Many students graduate after 2 years or so. So the attrition rate is much less than I implied.
