Cracking Down

My mother once told me that you shouldn’t crack your knuckles because it will end up making your knuckles larger. At least that’s what I remember. So for years I have refrained, with probably only a very few exceptions.

But now, it turns out that an orthopedics expert at Penn State says it causes no anatomical, physiological, or mechanical damage whatsoever.

What say you, mom?

  1. Well Byran, guess you can crack your knuckles all you want! After all, you’re of age. guess I was just trying to be a good mom and repeated something I had heard without checking it out. Maybe if I had gone to college……

    I love you !!!!!! Mom

  2. Please don’t tell Stephanie that fact!!!! I hate the sound so I’d like her to think it will make her knuckles ugly and no guy will want to hold hands w/ her!! Hows that for awful…..:)

  3. That’s a relief! I haven’t cracked my knuckles either, because of that.

  4. I searched “knuckle cracking arthritis” at pubmed.com… sadly Mr. Naidu appears to be right as regards arthritis.

But to back up your mom… one study of 300 people (Ann Rheum Dis. 1990 Nov;49(11):957) found that knuckle-crackers tend to have swollen hands and less grip strength. Further, the abstract states that “habitual knuckle cracking was associated with manual labour, biting of the nails, smoking, and drinking alcohol. It is concluded that habitual knuckle cracking results in functional hand impairment.”

From my own selfish viewpoint, brotherly love should cause Christians to refrain from knuckle-cracking in public. It makes me queasy. 🙂

  5. Looks like you’ve been posting about as often as I have, By. Way to go! 🙂 Keep prayin’ for us…
