Instant Messaging

I haven’t been IM’ing for that long, and though it has the potential to drive me to waste even more time on the computer, I have found it to be a good way to keep in touch with some of my friends.

The disconcerting thing about IM at times is that there are no non-verbal social cues to be picked up. In a way it’s like normal conversation, except you have no idea if the person is rolling his eyes waiting for you to shut up or breathlessly waiting for your next comment.

  1. That’s why I generally type in things such as [rolls eyes] or [sigh] or use an occasional smiley, so that I can connote some of those parts of communication that’d normally be taken care of by inflection or body language. But your point is still entirely valid.
