Obama’s Vetting

President Obama was lauded in the primaries for his unusually rigorous vice-presidential vetting process, but he seems to have stumbled on that front in his choices of cabinet and staff. Tim Geithner (Treasury), Tom Daschle (Health and Human Services), and Nancy Killefer (Chief Performance Officer) have all faced fire for tax issues, and the latter two withdrew. Now the president has to make his third selection for Commerce secretary after his first two choices have also bowed out.

One wonders whether the same sort of vetting rigor was applied to these choices. I have no historical context, but my sense is that this hasn’t been a very smooth series of nominations for the Obama administration.
